Replace Camera vs Replace Shutter?

On July 8, 2009, in equipment, by Gavin Blue

My Nikon D3 passed 110,000 shutter actuations recently and I was thinking it was time to retire it to second body status and get an upgrade. I think the shutter is supposed to last to 300,000 but I have heard of them failing past 100,000, so I thought it is better to be safe than shutterless.
I was speaking to the camera clinic about what other people do and to my surprise the price of the shutter replacement was minimal and they mentioned some photographers have been replacing the shutter every 100k actuations.
When I picked up the camera, the minimal cost was even less (only about $200) because it seems Nikon for whatever reason, has been subsidizing some D3 shutter replacements.
I rarely come out of a photography industry supplier’s place of business spending much less than I thought. What a good day.
