I have worked with the Victorian Institute of Sport for over 10 years, outlasting 3 marketing teams. One of their events I shoot is the annual Awards of Excellence where they announce the Athlete of the Year. This year we decided to get individual shots of as many athletes as possible on their way into the event. Possibly 300+ athletes in about 45minutes. The client was happy with flash on camera but I though it was a perfect opportunity for a fast Strobist setup.
I took my thinkTANK Airport Airstream and Airport Ultralight (for some reason mistakenly labelled Antidote 2.0) bags with Nikon D3, D3x, 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm and 8 Speedlights.

Clever!
quite a task and well done ! but …. that background is hideous …… : )
Nice Job – just curious what soft box is that? Elvis Bracket?
Thanks Jason,
The softbox is an Interfit octagon softbox and the bracket is made by a guy in sydney who I found through the dpreview forums. He mainly makes speedlight umbrella brackets contact him through http://www.ep-designs.com/

Your gear looks like it enjoyed the red carpet treatment!
Good work Gavin. Nice simple and hassle-free setup with the shots and that bracket certainly looks interesting. I noticed there is a bit of light kicking in on the subjects left flank – was this intentional? Looking at the setup shot, it looks like you have your speedlight scrimmed with the Honl barn door. Or perhaps it is light reflecting from the backdrop?!… either way I like the effect.
Well my favourite bag maker ThinkTANK Photo have seen my shots of their product on the red carpet and are now going to use it in their next international brochure.
They are sending me some bags of my choice for my trouble, Very nice.

I love your blog! I was referred here from ThinkTank Photo. I am interested in the Airport Airstream. How much gear can you fit in there? Thanks!

Hi Wendy,
Check out his blog post for what I fit in the airport airstream.

I have recently got a airport security to accommodate video audio equipment, fisheye lens and 1.7 teleconvertor.
The ThinkTank Photo bags are incredibly good, with excellent service.

I am looking for a bag to hold a Canon 5d Mk II, three lenses, and a couple flashes, plus my laptop and a few travel essentials, while still being able to stow it underneath the seat. It looks like it should work. Thanks for the info!

What country are you in?
